New Year, New Career!

The turning of a New Year often sets our minds on a path of change and this can include thinking about a new career. But, if you are thinking of making changes why not take a minute or two to find out what your true passion is and where you should be heading in 2013? You won’t regret it.

Finding the True You

Finding out who you are is not a difficult process – you just need to be honest with yourself about what you want, enjoy and need to be happy. And the start of this process is to ask the following questions:

  • Who am I?
  • What do I want to do with my life?
  • How do I get the career I want?

Who am I?

There are two very effective ways to do this – discovering your talents and using psychometric tests. The first way, discovering your talents, is simply a case of answering the following questions. However, do take your time when answering and really consider each question carefully – there’s no point doing the exercise if you are not honest and truthful with yourself:

  1. Imagine you have all the money you need, what would you do with your time?
  2. What do you love about this world?
  3. Where do you think you could make a difference?
  4. When are you most creative?
  5. If you already work, what jobs do you like to do the most?
  6. What activities do you like to participate in outside of work?
  7. When and where did you feel the most passionate, committed and enthusiastic?
  8. What talents and skills were you relying on when you felt the emotions mentioned above?
  9. What do you consider is your greatest accomplishment?
  10. From your previous experience, what job have you enjoyed the most?
  11. What makes you want to take a stand in the world?
  12. Ask others to tell you when they think you’ve been the most successful

Now you have this information, you should have a clearer view of what you should be doing. You should be able to identify the talents that you use when you are most successful and, once you have these, you can think about how to put them to use in your new career.

Psychometric testing is another way you can discover your strengths and weaknesses. These tests are devised by experts and, although they are not a complete analysis of your character, they will give you some valuable insight.

These tests are available in many places on the web, including:

Next week we’ll look at the second question, ‘What do I want to do with my life?,’ and how you can find the answers to it.
