Why a Good Command of English is Important for Your Career

English is the most widely spoken language around the world and is required for communicating in a variety of professional fields including: business, information technology, science, medicine, aviation, entertainment, radio, diplomacy and more.

Over a billion people speak English to at least a basic level and it is one of the six official languages of the United Nations – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish

And often when people from different countries get together their common language is English.

English at Work

So, if you have a good command of English your opportunities for a well paid and interesting career are greatly increased. You’ll be able to work for, or deal with, International companies and organisations around the world, which in turn may lead to opportunities to travel and broaden your outlook.

English for Pleasure

Understanding English can also open up new worlds to you and widen your social circle. Most of the Internet is written in English and it’s easy to make friends and contacts around the world via Facebook or LinkedIn. Then there are the millions of videos on YouTube and my personal favourite channel – Ted Talks.

Off-line pleasures include: films, books, TV, songs and radio in English for you to enjoy too – providing you understand them.

Learning English

There are many different types of courses that can help you to improve your English – whether it’s your first language or second.

You can take a distance learning courses to study at home at your convenience, you can take a class; you can buy self-help CDs or study online.

Whichever way you study English it is the regular use of the language that will help you to develop it most. So make sure you do a little each day – either study course materials, reading magazines or books, watching TV, listening to the radio or chatting with someone else in English. And, if you can, try writing everyday as well.
