Creating a Local Blog

Many students enrol on our Complete Copywriter Course but we often get asked how they can find work as a freelance copywriter once they have completed the course.

There are many ways of doing this (they’re all explained in the course) but I thought I’d share one that I think is particularly useful: creating a blog to promote your services.

If you choose to blog you might decide to write about copywriting. But this is not necessarily the best way of attracting new clients. A better way to go about it is to start a business blog for your local area. Write about local businesses and news of interest to them (you should be able to find plenty of stories in your local paper, allied with a bit of your own research). These businesses will inevitably be checking up on what’s happening in their local area, and sooner or later they’re bound to come across your blog.

Be sure to mention the names of local businesses in your blog, especially any you would particularly like to work for. This will provide an extra opportunity for these companies to find you via search engines. Businesses ego surf (they look for mentions of their name online). So your local businesses will find your blog and will discover there that you’re a copywriter. When they need a copywriter, your name will, hopefully, spring to mind.

You could also publish on your blog case studies about your existing clients. People love to read stories about successful local businesses, and they will also serve as testimonials for you and your service. Occasionally you won’t be able to write a case study about a client because your work with them will be confidential. Many clients, however, will be only too happy for you to write up what you did for them in a case study as it will be free publicity for them. Just remember to ask them first!

Finally, in case you’re worried about blogging taking up too much of your time, I should add that running a local business blog will normally fit itself into the time you have available. Blog when you have a moment, or when you’re in the mood. A couple of posts a month is all that is required. As the content on your blog increases, more people will find you.  A little investment of your time now should pay off handsomely in extra clients for your copywriting service for years to come.

And this doesn’t just apply to freelance copywriters. You could start blogging and adopt a similar approach (tailored to the circumstances) if you wish to sell your services as a freelance proof reader or even a freelance writer.
