Last week we looked at some of the questions you need to ask yourself before looking for a job. Now you know the sort of job you’re after you need to find and apply for it.
Five Sources for Jobs
1. Advertisements in newspapers and trade journals
2. Employment agencies
3. Online
4. Within your own company
5. Asking around friends and family to see if they know of any vacancies where they work.
Four Rules for Replying to an Advertisement
1. Make sure the job on offer will suit your needs then study the details carefully so your reply will show your potential employer that you can meet THEIR needs.
2. Follow the instructions in the advert. If you don’t, you won’t get past first base.
3. Reply as quickly as you can, but don’t spoil your application by rushing it. First impressions really do count.
4. If you’re sending off to more than one company make sure you send the right application to the right potential employer.
Three Don’ts for Your CV
1. Never lie on your CV. You will be found out in the end and you could lose your new job.
2. Don’t have spelling mistakes or errors on your CV – you do want the interview after all.
3. Don’t make your CV too long. Your potential employer wants to see you are qualified for the job not read your life story.
Two Ways to Apply for a Job
1. Send a brief covering letter of application together with your CV.
2. Complete an application form (if the advert instructs you to send for one) and send it with a brief covering letter.
