Knowing About Business

Knowing business English is really only the start of your business education. If you want to have a successful business career, you’ll also have to know about how business works; the terms used, the newest theories and ideas, the latest ‘buzz words’ and so on. But, where do you find that kind of information? Easy, it’s all online!

Where can I Find Information About Business?

Just use a term such as ‘business’ in Google and you get over 8,000,000,000 results, so there’s no shortage of places to read about the hottest new marketing technique or whatever. So, where do you start?

Newspapers:

A good place to start sorting through the huge variety of results is to look at the major newspapers in your country – or the country you want to work in. These will be written in a language that is reasonably easy to understand as they are written for the general public to read. Here are the links to some of the UK’s major newspapers business’ sections. But, beware some of these you will have to subscribe and pay for:

The Guardian

The Times

The Independent

Trade Publications:

There are thousands of trade publications, covering every possible industry or area you can think of. Some will charge a subscription fee, but there are plenty that don’t and the level of knowledge expected of the reader will vary from publication to publication. Below are some websites you can use to get started.

London Loves Business – this website has a great range of content from Business News and Analysis to information for entrepreneurs. It focuses mainly on London business life, but the content is applicable to business all over the world.

Freebizmag – as the name suggests, this website provides access to free business magazines. You can browse by industry and there are categories such as management, marketing, sales, agriculture and transportation. All you need to do to access the publications is fill in a few questions so that you get publications that are tailored to you interests and away you go.

Tradepub – this website is pretty much like the one above – more free trade publications. But, this one also has white papers, podcasts and downloads you can access.

Other Places to Find out Business News:

But, these publications are not the only place you can keep up to date with all the latest business news. You can also visit and contribute to business forums. These will contain other people who either work in the business or are as interested as you to learn about it. They often require a subscription of some kind, which is understandable as they only want people who are truly interested submitting messages to the threads. As an example, here’s one of the UK’s best business forums:

UK Business Forum – here there are forums on sales and marketing, problems with red tape, start-up issues, IT, accounting and so on.

Free Business Forums – pretty much the same as above.

UK Business Labs

So, there you have it – a whole range of places where you can learn more about the wonderful world of business. If you want your business news to be more local, just search to see if you can find similar websites for your country, or location. I am pretty sure you will and when you do, please let me know so I can let the other students know too.
