Fun and Games for Learning

Games are a great way to learn and have fun at the same time. Last week I detailed some single-player games, so this week I thought I’d feature multiplayer games. Competition can be a great motivator and playing against someone can push you to try harder than you would if you were simply playing against the computer. Have a look at the games below and choose one you like.

Quadplex

I love this game! It’s free to use, you play people from all over the world and it’ll improve your vocabulary. I can’t say it better myself, so I’ll let the makers of the game explain it in more detail:

“Quadplex is an online word game in which 2 to 4 players score points by forming words from individual lettered tiles on a 15 by 15 game board. The words are formed across and down in crossword fashion and must appear in a standard dictionary.”

WordSquared

This is the same principle as the game above, however, on a grand scale! The board is huge and you can ‘teleport’ around it adding your words to the game as you go. You can also click on words that appear on the board to see who added them and what their dictionary definition is.

Multipopword

This is totally addictive and great for helping you increase your vocabulary. You play in rooms, depending on your level, from easiest to hardest, against other players. All players have the same letters and the aim of the game is to find as many words as you can in the allotted time. Your score is then totalled and tabled so you can see where you’ve come in the list of players. Great fun!

Multi Eight

This is another game where you can pit yourself against other players. You get a set of eight letters and have to make as many words as you can in a set amount of time. Your scores are compiled into a leader board so you can see how well you are doing.

Wordz

This is an anagram game with a difference. There are three words to solve whilst playing against an opponent. Fast and furious.

Arcademic Skill Builders has numerous multiplayer games that will help you improve your skills at spelling (Spelling Bees), antonyms, synonyms and homonyms (Furious Frogs), verbs (Verb Viper), vowels (Coconut Vowels), typing skills (Typing Jets), parts of speech (Word Invasion), word recognition (Kitten Hop) and double vowels (Turtle Dash). They are all great fun and easy to play.

If you have any other multiplayer games that help you learn English please do share them with us.
