Speed of Communication

Last summer I read Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel which is a wonderful book and if you’re interested in Tudor England it’s a must read. What’s this got to do with business I hear you say? Well not a lot. But around the time of the Tudors the printing press was coming into its own. There was a passage in the book about how, because of the printing press, the speed of communication of political and religious ideas could spread like the wind across Europe – in as little as three months!

Well to the modern mind taking three months to get a new idea out to a mass audience is preposterous. More like three seconds to go global these days.

But it did lead me to reflect on how communication has such a large impact on all areas of life. I touched on it last week when talking about Twitter.

Even though the printing press developed over the years, communication stayed pretty much the same. Then along came radio, the telephone and TV, which speeded the up process a little more.

Now we have the Internet, and ideas – both good and bad – can be spread within seconds by anyone who has a mind to say something. And that’s a key point – by anyone – not just the authorities or those with a great deal of money. All very democratic!

But this is a double-edged sword – it also means that there is great opportunity to deceive and betray – so proceed with caution and check out people’s credentials.

Benefits of Fast Communication

This speed of communication can be very beneficial to many areas of life and not least in business and, of course, training.

The Internet makes it possible to do business easily with people all over the world and for people to access quality training at a time that suits them.

Here at Business Training we have certainly seen the benefit for our students. They no longer have to wait for course materials to arrive. If someone has Internet access and a credit card, shaboom … they can be studying within minutes of finding the training they need.

However, we appreciate that not everyone has these facilities so we still send out printed materials and return exam papers in the post. And you don’t need a credit card to enrol.

Ah yes! Don’t forget to check out our credentials. Visit our About Us page to find out more.
