In this issue we look at ten tips for avoiding leadership mistakes; even more tips for ensuring professional email etiquette – and we remind you how to remember it all!

In the UK we’re taking a breather before we launch into the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next month and then the Olympic Games over the summer. In these difficult times there has been lots of debate about whether these will be good for the economy or just a distraction. There will be an extra day’s holiday for the Jubilee, leading to loss of productivity, but will the feel-good factor boost the economy? As regards the Olympics, will the building projects and increased tourism bring benefits or will tourists who are not interested in the games stay away? Will the economic advantages radiate out to other regions of the country or just benefit the London area? These are all questions that people are asking at the moment and only time will tell which point of view is right.

In this issue we’re going to look at the ten most common leadership and management mistakes. Now I know that many of you won’t be leading a team yet, but the advice that the article provides is useful whether you’re dealing with a group of people or just one individual.

The main point, when it comes to managing people properly, is good communication skills. If you’re not happy with what is going on you need to be able to tell people and explain the problem to them in a polite and constructive manner. You need to be able to give clear instructions (verbally and in writing) and ensure that they are carried out. In addition, you need to make yourself available to your workforce and listen to their suggestions, complaints or grievances. And when I say listen – I really mean listen and think about what they are saying.
