A work study sampling technique in which a large number of planned instantaneous observations is made over a given period of time of a group of machines, processes or workers. Each observation records what is happening at a given instant, and the percentage of observations recorded for a particular interval of time is taken to be a reflection of the actual percentage of time during which activity or delay occurs. Also known as work sampling, snap reading method, ratio-delay study, random observation method.
