A measure of central tendency normally synonymous with ‘average’ although it is only one of several statistical measures of average. The result is obtained by dividing the sum of two or more quantities by the number of items, e.g. the arithmetic mean of the three numbers 3, 4, and 5 is their sum (12) divided by 3 = 4.
