Business Bites

Return to Business Bites back issues

In this issue we look at: how to take the fear out of talking to an audience; finding out if you’ve got an eye for detail and preparing small adverts that really sell.

Sorry about there being no May issue – but I was on holiday in Cuba . Great weather, lovely scenery and fascinating old cities! I hope you missed hearing from us and that you’ll enjoy this month’s issue even more than usual.

I must confess that when it comes to social media I tend to bury my head in the sand. I don’t do Facebook (probably frightened that if I start it will take over my life) and I definitely don’t do Twitter. The latter is mainly because I don’t really get the point of it. I’m quite a private person and I don’t want to know what celebrities, sportspeople etc are doing and thinking, and I ‘m certainly not vain enough to consider that anyone would be vaguely interested in what I’m doing. But I have to admit that it is a useful business tool and is even starting to shape the world in which we live – you only need to look at how it has been used in the string of revolutions in the Arab world and the recent ‘Super Injunction’ case here in the UK. So, if you want to know more about how Twitter is coming of age, have a look at Susan Metcalfe’s blog.

Moving on to this month’s issue – we have some interesting items for you! The first is for anyone who’s ever had an interest in proofreading. Many people think that proofreading is easy. If you’re one of them, visit the Society for Editors and Proofreaders Site and you can take the test they have devised. If it whets your appetite then consider enrolling with us on our Proofreading and Copy Editing course.

Next up is an article about giving presentations. It’s something that makes most people quake – the thought of standing up on your own and addressing an audience. But with proper planning you’ll have more confidence and you could even come to enjoy it.

Finally, if you run your own business, you may find that you have to write small adverts from time to time – to find new staff, publicise your products etc; so our third article looks at how to do this job effectively. Of course, if you want to know more in-depth information about copywriting, then it’s our Complete Copywriter Course that you really need. So, let’s get down to business...
